Actually, Your Mindset Doesn’t Matter.

What would you say if I told you that your mindset doesn’t matter?

That all of your goals are achievable no matter what you believe?

What if I told you that it DOES NOT matter how prepared you are. Or how knowledgeable?

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” – Zig Ziglar

Read that out loud. Be sure to say “Zig Ziglar” because that is the most fun part. You can even turn it into an articulation exercise if you so desire. (I use it as an octave exercise. Most of the teens eye-roll me, but I know they secretly LURV it.)

Mindset only matters if you are acting on something.

If you aren’t yet writing that book, creating that new client onboard, re-recording that video, or practicing that /i/ vowel, no amount of good vibes and happy thoughts is going to do it for you.

At some point, waiting to feel right about something is just another excuse to procrastinate and complain.

Doesn’t matter how amazing you feel. If you aren’t doing anything, you’re dead in the water.

There are a lot of books out there about mindset. I own them all because I effing LURV Brené, and Liz Gilbert, and Steven Pressfield, all the other people that tell me to get my head outta the gutter and into freedom.

Still, me being convinced that I have something to say that someone will listen to means jack if I don’t create something for someone to listen to.

Feeling empowered doesn’t type out blogs or fold your laundry.
Having confidence in your research doesn’t create workshops.
Finally understanding what resonance is for your instrument doesn’t sing concerts.

We wait. We wait to feel different.

GUESS WHAT? FEELINGS are just that. FEELINGS. They do not have to control you. You can say, “oh hello horrible feeling, I see you’ve stopped by for tea.” And while said feeling has their feet up on your coffee table, drinking Earl Grey with cream and one lump, YOU CAN STILL BE CLEANING THE TOILET.

Here is a list of things you can do, when you are having “feelings”:

  1. Write a blog about feelings
  2. Set up your email list welcome messages
  3. Invoice students/clients
  4. Write an email to a colleague you’ve always wanted to meet
  5. Make cookies
  6. Create an outline of a workshop
  7. Edit YouTube videos
  8. Make a FB ad for your studio
  9. Send current students a happy “can’t wait to see you” text message
  10. Bookkeeping

For the love of you, PLEASE stop waiting to feel different. Because it won’t matter. How you feel will change, on the daily.
The tasks piling up won’t.

Give yourself the freedom of not giving a hoot about your mindset and go get something done.

Go ahead, take the red pill, and give up the need for your feelings to determine your actions.

AND HEY! FOR FUN! Watch this! And yes! Imma sassypants today.

I call acting on the need to start or complete a task in the absence of those fuzzy feelings and positive mindset ‘just do it mode.’ There is so much that needs to be done, but it won’t get done if we’re always waiting until we’re inspired or in the mood.
